The past few months may have been some of the most challenging yet for vehicle sales across Europe, but one part of the sector has bucked a declining trend – electric vehicles (EVs).
According to automotive data specialist JATO, registrations of petrol and diesel cars in Europe fell by a third year-on-year in June 2020, but EV sales were up almost two-thirds over the same period. Concerns about climate change, advances in battery technology and Europe’s success developing more affordable long-range EVs are all contributing to a rise in demand that could lead to an increase in electric vehicles reaching the aftermarket for servicing and repair.
DENSO has released the latest version of its vehicle inspection system, e-Videns. The new update not only increases the tool’s speed and coverage, it also allows technicians to completely customize the inspection by selecting from a range of modules, tailoring the checklist and order to suit the vehicle and the time available.
If you’ve not yet worked with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) in your workshop, you’re about to. Last year, the EU provisionally agreed to make ADAS compulsory on all new vehicles from 2022. The innovative safety technology is already one of the fastest-growing segments in the vehicle diagnostic market, installed as standard in most makes and models of car. For independent workshops with the right equipment and understanding of these systems, ADAS represents a huge profit opportunity, particularly as autonomous vehicle development progresses.
With regulators setting ever-more-ambitious emissions targets, the age of electric vehicles will soon be upon us. Workshops might feel unprepared to deal with electric and hybrid vehicles – but by partnering with DENSO, they can have access to the right parts, knowledge and support to ensure they have a competitive advantage as electrification continues to gather pace.
As the FIA World Endurance Championship returned after an enforced absence during the COVID-19 outbreak, TOYOTA GAZOO Racing were back to their winning ways at the Total 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps on 15 August. The team occupied the top two spots on the podium, with the #7 TS050 HYBRID crew of Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and José María López taking the gold.
